Taking a Stand

Yesterday, while walking through the Village, I happened upon this belt buckle in a store window:

Because, you know, some people DON’T like Nazis. Is this for wearing when you meet your new girlfriend’s jewish family, to put them at ease?

I feel like something like this could only be designed by a racist. Like maybe the rest of the line included items with slogans like “Jews: they’re born that way — it’s not their fault!” and “Actually, I disagree with Hitler”. Most of us who really don’t hate jews never think: “This not-hating-jews stuff is revolutionary! I gotta tell people about it!”

I imagine it being worn by a really sensitive, yet angry dude — along with his “Nigger is a terrible word” t-shirt and “Child Molesters are the worst!” baseball cap.

The problem is that swastikas, despite the evil they represent, are graphically very cool and this is an excuse to wear said awesome/evilness without actually being truly evil.

It’s funny that the root for swastika actually means “well-being” in sanskrit. Apparently, it’s a pretty common symbol for Hindus and other Dharmic religions (thanks, Wikipedia!). You can imagine how pissed Hindus must get when they see a pin like this. Or rather, you can imagine how pissed Hindus got when the Nazis stole their symbol. Probably kind of like how all the punks felt when the jocks started listening to Green Day or something. Did I just compare jocks to Nazis, or punks to Hindus? Not really. Either way, a jock did scratch a swastika into the trunk of my car in high school, so I think I can let it slide.

    Unless he was Hindu. Dammit.

That’s like German anti-fascist gang wear. All skinheads in leather look like neo-Nazis. When they listen to some of the same music it gets more confusing. This way they know who to fight with after the lager runs out.
