Cultivating Dum-dums

What is the fucking fuck with Jon Gosselin?

Seriously, who gives a shit? Anyone? You? Why?? Honestly, I would love to know — please leave your reasons in the comments. Because as far as I can tell, he’s a giant, boring, fat-faced, baby dum-dum, who mistakenly thinks he’s important because people keep taking pictures of him. There is nothing interesting about him at all, unless you are interested in how much air can be wasted by one set of mayonaise-coated lungs.

When I was a kid it seemed like the media and schools were breathlessly racing to stuff as much knowledge as possible into our brains. Sesame Street, Schoolhouse Rock, book mobiles, Sex Ed — the world wanted us to know, EVERYTHING. The awards we won were academic or creative, and most people didn’t even know they had beauty pageants for kids.

Then somehow the country slid into worship of the idiot. Television is filled with stupid people being rewarded and praised for acting as dumb as possible. If you knocked an angry monkey in the head and gave it a job tending bar in South Beach, VH1 would devote hours of programming to watching it shreik and bone skanks. Even nerds aren’t nerds anymore. “Nerds” now are just hipsters that kept their Star Wars action figures. Worst of all, knowledge is withheld from children — learning about evolution, or sex, is seen as a threat by an embarrassingly large segment of the population.

In fact, intelligence itself is now seen as threatening, so people end up supporting dummies like Sarah Palin. They justify their support by twisting reality to see her — let’s be honest — stupidity, as “independent thinking”. Like, she’s not going to be held down by the LIBERAL MEDIA’s accepted geography or definition of what is considered a “newspaper”. She’s thinking for herself! Poorly!

Our standards are getting lower as our fear gets greater — we trade away our freedom little by little in favor of security. We’re putting mush into our brains and then letting them sit on the couch all day instead of taking them out for a jog.

And this, people, THIS is why I am begging you to stop paying attention to Jon Gosselin. Just like any evil spirit, he’s only there as long as you believe in him. Stop believing in Jon Gosselin. Stop clapping for the Stallionaires and Tila Tequila to come back to life. Stop it before it’s too late and you find yourself hoping for a chance to give a blow job to a drunk monkey.

Did you see the Conan last week where the audience booed when he said Heidi and Spencer were guests?

It made my heart swell with pride.

It’s at the 12 minute mark.

  2. Well frickin said. I watched about five minutes of one episode of Jon & Kate and was horrified to think people might take it as example — a husband and wife completely unable to communicate or show respect to each other and the exploitation of their children was mortifying. This is everything that boils inside of me, thank you for giving it the words I lacked!

I often wonder why we don’t use the general public’s innate curiosity of the private lives of others (birthing “reality television”) to create more shows demonstrating compassion and community-centeredness. “Ow My Balls” is sadly going to be a reality, and much sooner than predicted in “Idiocracy”.

So relieved I am not alone in my thoughts. You are an asset to the human race. This entry could and should be the basis for a book. Disseminate to the masses! Uprising!

Incredible. I could not have said it better. You are amazing, Eliza! I’m going to repost this everywhere.

  8. Christopher Daniel says:

If it makes you feel better, I had to Google “Jon Gosselin” to find out what you were talking about.

I am not happier for knowing; after such knowledge, what forgiveness?

  9. If God is perfect and if ID is a viable theory and counterpoint to evolution, then how did God create a complex and faulty organism called man? Does this mean God is faulty, or did I not get enought sleep yesterday?

Came across your website through horror movies…

There’s nothing in and of John Gosslyn that was ever remotely entertaining. I did, for about the space of a year, watch their show, halfheartedly (saw maybe 6 episodes while getting secondary work done – fills up space when HGTV is too annoying to watch. :P ). When the picture of their life was focused on what it took to get 8 children through one day, it was kind of interesting. When he began withdraw from taking care of his kids, I felt some sorrow over where those children’s lives are statistically headed, but I lost all interest in him as entertainment. A man who won’t take care of his own is worthless. And I mean that to cover more than just mere finances.

As for superstition and right wingers, that always gets a laugh out of me, for several reasons: an Austrailian Skeptic’s magazine printed a study that showed superstition increased (believing that a black cats’ path crossing is bad luck, or that psychic vampires are real) with the decrease in Christianity (only 2 – 5 years ago?). (Skeptics are Atheists, btw). The uber-conservatives (those that are more likely to be regular church-going people) dislike Palin for many of the same reasons you dislike her. I can’t remember the last time anyone I knew actually liked either Bush or Obama. *sigh*

Oh, and this crazy Christian Creationist group would love to be refuted on the following rant: http://www.answersingenesis.org/creation/v16/i3/upsidedown.asp (Just to see if you can tolerate looking at it.)

My basic working theory is that if you take away something that has a definite sense of right and wrong, you get a whole spectrum of belief that looks a lot more like superstition than Christianity does itself. Have fun!

John Gosselin is not deserving to have the love of Kate;:.

I came for comedy, but I stayed for the intelligence. What you say about “when I was a kid” is true. I think kids today are trying to ignore how stupid adulthood looks. It’s like we flipped poles.
